        By the time it dawns on you that a 6-feet contemporary Bollywood actor (in a cameo) has been passed off as the unabridged undercover for Shah Rukh Khan's Don in the film, you are expected to be equipped for many more of such cinematic liberties. And rather than crying a spoiler there, you could rather preset your logic mode to the multiple masquerades in store in the movie.
Don 2, the sequel starts off almost from where the earlier episode ended and while it attempts to maintain some continuity with the last installment, it fails to bring back the intelligence of the original. Don (Shah Rukh Khan) emerges in Malaysia and gets himself arrested only to get the convicted Vardhan (Boman Irani) out of jail. Vardhan has keys to a video footage which they use to blackmail a bank vice president (Alyy Khan) to get access to a German bank's security systems. The big plan is the old-fashioned and formulaic robbery of the currency printing plates from the bank. So the sequel to Don merely boils down to being a heist film.

The film, more or less, starts as an action flick with Don's one-man-army introduction inThailand, a convenient escape from Malaysian prison and some conventional car-chase sequences in Germany. None of them excite much until you realize you have already reached the interval. The plotting and scheming starts in the second half with an easy induction of a hacker (Kunal Kapoor) who can not only barge into the security systems of the vault but also seems to have blueprints of the bank building to the minutest details.

The writing by Ameet Mehta, Amrish Shah and Farhan Akhtar is more style over substance attempting to camouflage cliches with the cool quotient. Even the central heist seems confusing and convoluted but Farhan Akhtar intentionally keeps the pacing swift enough, leaving no time for the viewer to notice any loose ends. However, the more he makes the situation easy to suit his script, the more it becomes difficult for the audience to digest things.

Even the robbery seems mundane Hollywoodish exercise with no moments of thrills in particular. However the highlight isn't the heist per se but Don's hidden agenda behind it. While it isn't much difficult to decode the mystery, it makes for a decent climax. The director mercifully keeps mush away from the major proceedings though he can't resist the temptation in the climactic portion in his attempts to induce chemistry between Don and his rival, Roma (Priyanka Chopra). But Don would have been better-off as the suave and stonyhearted killer rather than a 'Rahul' prototype. Thankfully the chemistry is peripheral and never blooms into romance.

Also one would have preferred to see Don as more brain over brawny hero but the director makes him a jack of all trades giving him James Bond kinda complete-man characteristics. Vulnerability is alien to Don, essentially making him larger-than-life. But despite being an unethical drug-lord, Farhan Akhtar's treatment is such that you still adore him as the hero over abhorring him as an outright villain. Don 2 never gets into the good v/s evil battle.

The cinematography by Jason West is striking. However Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's musical score doesn't leave a mark this time and the background score has to repeatedly resort to the theme-piece from the original for some impact. Farhan Akhtar's punch-lines in dialogues are initially amusing but with a Don-ism in every second line, it sounds hackneyed and hollow after a point.

Shah Rukh Khan is in his comfort zone as the Don bringing more charm than cruelty to his character. He rules supreme and the film's indulgence with him is as much as Don's obsession with himself. Everyone else is overshadowed. Priyanka Chopra is passable. Lara Dutta, as the Don's moll, is simply a substitute for Isha Koppikhar from the prequel and is hardly there for a few scenes. Boman Irani is underused. Kunal Kapoor fails to register any impact. Om Puri, Alyy Khan and Nawab Shah are plain functional. Sahil Shroff irritates.

Don 2 ends with the promise of Don 3 (that's what the number-plate of Don's bike reads) and the trademark dialogue 'Don ko pakadna mushkil hi nahi, namumkim hai' (It's not just difficult to catch don, it's impossible). But we would surely want to 'catch' up with a more worthy sequel to this. It's not impossible Farhan. Is it?

Movie Review: Action has always been the high point of the Mission Impossible series. But this kind of action: Wow! The new film is essentially a relentless roller-coaster ride that doesn't give you a moment to sit back and keeps the adrenalin pumping to dizzy heights as Tom Cruise gets on his regular mission of saving the world, one more time. And once again, he has nothing on his side, not even his government, other than his physical prowess, his ability to perform the most death-defying stunts and an abundance of sheer luck which redefines the word 'impossible' as 'possible'. 

             This time however, he isn't working as the lone ranger but has a close knit crack team comprising agent carter ( Paula Patton), Brandt ( Jeremy Renner) and Benji ( Simon Pegg). While Carter adds the glamour quotient, apart from being a female action hero, Benji takes care of the humour element even as he manages the techie stuff and the funky gadgetry and Brandt, the analyst, remains unpredictable and mysterious with a deadly secret. It's a winning team, despite the individual differences and the foursome end up as an endearing family with each character having a substantial role to play. 
             But essentially it is the exquisite stunts and the high-decibel action set pieces which create magic on screen. The mission basically entails four main tasks: stealing a missing file, getting hold of the Cold War nuclear codes, infiltrating a satellite and finally, defusing a nuclear warhead before it strikes its target and decimates the world. But before the task is executed you get to witness some genre-defining action sequences which include a daring prison break in Russia, the infiltration of the Kremlin, Cruise's high-rise leaps and jumps followed by his awesome ascent over Dubai's tallest tower, Patton's cat fight with the blonde assassin, Brandt's satellite entry and the final confrontation in Mumbai's multi-level car parking. 
Performance-wise, Cruise is in total command of the drama which boasts of several engaging twists and turns. A word about Anil Kapoor: he plays playboy Brij Nath with a penchant for pretty girls and shady deals, in a comic vein. It is just a bit more than a blink-and-you'll-miss role as Patton unleashes her charms on him.

Story: Reshma ( Vidya Balan), a small town girl with dreams of stardom in her eyes, sets out for Chennai, with nothing but her passion to stir her on. After the usual period of struggle and rejections, she gets her break as an item girl who's got the most sensuous moves in town. It doesn't take her long to storm the box office as Silk, the sex symbol who's driving a whole generation crazy with her oomph. The industry too can't stay immune to her earthy charms and her list of worshipers -- and lovers -- keeps multiplying, until it's downhill time. Will simpleton Silk be able to survive the rigours of a heartless work place that discards faster than it accepts?  

Movie Review: All she had was her well endowed body, her in-your-face sexuality, her seductive moves and her rock hard confidence to carry her through a world that was more than willing to exploit a lone woman, seeking sustenance in a man's world. That was enough to transform Reshma into Silk, a storm that refused to be quelled by anything or anybody. Determined to take on the industry single-handedly and carve a niche for herself as a sex symbol in a hypocritical world, Silk was the steroid shot that sent the world in a tizzy. Journalists and holier-than-thou art film makers like Abraham (Emraan Hashmi), hysterical women's groups and the ubiquitous moral police branded her the scum of the earth. But her legion fans were ready to lay their lives for her and the industry heroes, like Suryakant ( Naseeruddin Shah) couldn't keep their eyes and hands off her. One dirty picture followed another and name, fame and success peaked to unimaginable heights for our girl from nowhere who unabashedly lived out her dreams. Her survival policy: savour the bouquets, ignore the brickbats. Life was literally on song.  

So where did the problem lie? It lay in the duplicity of a world which was hungering for sex, but was ashamed to acknowledge this primordial need. So that, serenading Silk was okay in the darkness of the auditorium or behind closed bedroom doors. But accepting her as part of the social pecking order was taboo, for Silk, in a sick society, was a synonym for dirt. Did Silk care? Of course, she did, although she gave the impression she gave a damn to the moral custodians and the double standards of society. But reality began to pinch -- and really hurt -- when her mother shut the door on her face, journalists, hungry for her interview otherwise, refused to entertain her in their page 3 parties and her lover (Naseeruddin Shah), who a minute ago was showering her with compliments, shunted her to the bathroom when his wife unexpectedly arrived. She tried to hide her pain through binge drinking and by changing her lovers ( Tusshar Kapoor), but the sense of rejection just refused to go away.

Partially responsible for her angst too was the arrogance that stars acquire with the onrush of success. One by one, she began to lose her friends in the industry and work stopped coming her way due to her cocky attitude. Didn't take long for the superstar to hit the road to destruction and end up as a sorry picture of failure and ruin. In this decrepit state -- the fate of most erstwhile Bollywood heroines -- her only friend was the man who hated her the most, Emraan Hashmi. But was it already too late to resuscitate a broken soul....

The Dirty Picture is essentially Vidya Balan's film, all the way. She gives a towering performance as the protagonist who remains unapologetic about her life till the very end. The high point of her act is the fact that despite portraying a sex bomb, her sexuality never ever gets vulgar and crude. Instead, there is an endearing quality to her attempts to shock and awe a staid society that thrives on the fake. Her tour de force act however doesn't throw the male leads into the shadows. They manage to hold their own in full measure, despite the relative meagerness of their roles. Also, it is the naughty dialogues (Rajat Arora) of the film which add immense flavour to the proceedings. It's a no-holds-barred screenplay which rightly refuses to treat sex as a four letter word. Kudos to Milan Luthria for handling such a controversial theme with such sensitivity and boldness.

The Dirty Picture is definitely not only your film for the week, but is a seminal work that will be studied in feminist discourses.
